LAPHROAIG QUARTER CASK (70cl, 48%)

A vibrant young Laphroaig whose maturation has been speeded up by ageing in Quarter Casks. In the early days of the 19th century, whisky was often transported bu mule or packhorse. The whisky would be placed into small 'quarter casks' and await collection. These casks provides stronger oak influences to the whisky and quarter casks, 'breathe' far more deeply, drawing in much more of the local air to infuse with the whisky. Due to modernazation, these uneconomic barrels quickly fell into disuse and were forgotten. This is a re-creation bottling of the times when the quarter casks were still in use. The strong oak influence created a soft sweetness and velvety feel when first tasted, then the intense peatiness so unique to Laphroaig comes bursting through. The finish is very long and alternates between the wood sweetness and the classic phenolic "peat reek" like the waves on the shore of Islay.

LAPHROAIG 40YO (70cl, 42.4%)

Laphroaig 40 year old was produced using distilling methods first established in 1815. Distillery owner, Bessie Williamson, used European oak to mature this particular vintage rather than the most commonly used American Bourbon oak. The barrels have lain undisturbed in Warehouse No.1, the oldest maturation building at Laphroaig, which is sited at the edge of the sea. During its 40 years in the warehouse, a percentage of the maturing whisky has been lost due to evaporation and replaced by the salt-laden air of Laphroaig Bay. The resulting rich and mellow whisky has been bottled at its original cask strength. It has a nose of gentle, full-bodied sweetness, seville orange type aromas deep in the the glass, occassionally honey type bouquet. Its palate, reminiscent of sweet liquorice root, with peat and seaweed in the background, smooth and gentle with a warm, velvety smooth finish.
