PORT ELLEN 1978 29YO, 8th Release (70cl, 55.3%)

The 8th Release of its Official Annual Release. This is a powerful, smoky bottling at natural cask strength from Islay's lost distillery, superbly fresh and strong for its age and very seductive. High notes of coal tar and smoke effortlessly command the elegant, mellow nose, underscored by swirling, syrupy-sweet baked apples and, in time, fresh sea-air aromas. Light bodied, the palate is surprisingly full of flavor after this subtlety; hot, sweet and powerfully smoky, with a cleansing acidity. Adding water soothes and cools. The long finish is sweet, then salty, with very late wood-smoke.

PORT ELLEN PROVENANCE 1983 (70cl, 46%)

Carrying a marriage of the sea and fruitiness on the nose, enjoy its saline and marine quality alongside the nuances of its Sherry cask heritage. On the palate, an initially dry fore-taste runs to pepperiness, softened by the characteristics of the cask. The finish is long, warming, smoky plus the archetypal old leather from Port Ellen which runs on and on, tinged late by seaweed and iodine. Distilled in the Spring of 1983, bottled in the Summer of 2005 by Douglas McGibbon.
